The stars who were nearly cast in top action movies

Many of our favorite action movies have become so iconic that we couldn’t imagine them any other way. From the storylines, to the special effects, to the actors playing the main roles, all of those things have become etched on our memories and it’s hard to visualize it differently. But often, the star of our favorite movie wasn’t the first show and it is interesting to wonder how things might have panned out had these actors taken these roles.

Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones

Selleck was enjoying television success with Magnum PI and was set to cash in on that to play the famous archaeologist-turned-adventurer Indiana Jones. However, contractual issues meant he could not be released from his TV work to film the movie and the part went to Harrison Ford instead.

Liam Neeson as James Bond

Neeson was reportedly offered the part of James Bond in movie Goldeye, however he turned it down after Natasha Richardson, who was soon to be his wife, objected, saying she couldn’t marry him if he as James Bond. The part went to another Irish-born actor Pierce Brosnan.

Bill Murray as Batman

When the Batman brand resurfaced in the later 1980s, it was thought the it would follow in the same footsteps as the 1960s camp TV show and Murray was reportedly considered for the role of the caped crusader. However, director Tim Burton took a more gothic, comic book twist on the genre and the part went to Michael Keaton.

Al Pacino as Hans Solo

Again, someone else’s loss was Harrison Ford’s gain. Riding high on the success of the Godfather, Pacino was offered the role of Hans Solo for the first Star Wars move but turned it down because he said he “didn’t understand the script”.
