Six super facts about the man who brought us Mitch Rapp

Vince Flynn, the man behind the Mitch Rapp series of political thrillers, left behind a legacy of gripping action novels before his untimely death from cancer in 2013 at the age of 47.

The acclaimed author actually came to writing quite a by accident, but his body of work shows a talented writer.

Here are some interesting about Flynn you may not know.

1. Vincent Joseph Flynn was born in St Paul, Minnesota, in April 1966. He was one of seven children to parents Terry and Kathleen Flynn.

2. He graduated with a BA in Economics from the University of St Thomas in Minnesota and took a sales and marketing job for Kraft Foods.

3. Flynn enlisted with US Marine Corp as an aviator but was medically disqualified from the Marine Aviator Program just a week before starting Officer Candidate School.

4. He began writing as a way to treat his dyslexia. Flynn believed that a daily routine of reading and writing would help improve his condition. Among the many authors he read were Tom Clancy, Ernest Hemmingway and JRR Tolkien. This is inspired to write his own first novel, Term Limits, which he self-published in 1997.

5. The first book to feature his most famous character Mitch Rapp, a CIA assassin, was Transfer of Power, which was published in 1999. Flynn went on to write a total of 13 books featuring Rapp before his death in 2013. Kyle Mills has written a further six Mitch Rapp novels since 2015.

6. One of Flynn’s Mitch Rapp novels, America Assassin, was adapted into a 2017 movie starring Michael Keaton.

He went on to practice law for 10 years before winning election to the Mississippi House of Representatives. It was during his a time as a state legislator that he began his writing career.

Lee Child – Television producer

Child, whose real name is James Grant, is best known for his series of Jack Reacher novels. However, in a previous life he as a television producer for Granada TV in the north-west of England. He produced many TV shows, wrote and produced commercials and also news items. He started writing novels after he was made redundant due to corporate restructuring.

James Patterson – Advertising executive

A prolific writer of political action thrillers, Patterson studied English at college, but started of his working life as an advertising executive. He worked for the New York-based J. Walter Thompson and it wasn’t until he retired that he turned his hand to writing full-time.
