The previous jobs of top action authors

Their names adorn the covers of some of the best-known action thrillers on the shelves of bookshops, but many action authors had other jobs before they took to writing.

Here are the previous jobs of some of the most famous thriller writers.

John Grisham – lawyer and politician

Grisham is best known for his legal thrillers, so it will come as no surprise that he previously practiced law. However, the bestselling author also had a career in politics. In fact, he actually achieved his college degree in accounting Mississippi State University. After that, he studied law at University of Mississippi School of Law.

He went on to practice law for 10 years before winning election to the Mississippi House of Representatives. It was during his a time as a state legislator that he began his writing career.

Lee Child – Television producer

Child, whose real name is James Grant, is best known for his series of Jack Reacher novels. However, in a previous life he as a television producer for Granada TV in the north-west of England. He produced many TV shows, wrote and produced commercials and also news items. He started writing novels after he was made redundant due to corporate restructuring.

James Patterson – Advertising executive

A prolific writer of political action thrillers, Patterson studied English at college, but started of his working life as an advertising executive. He worked for the New York-based J. Walter Thompson and it wasn’t until he retired that he turned his hand to writing full-time.
