When it comes to bringing video games to life on the big screen, it can be hard to strike the right balance, capture the tone of the game and put together a story that will keep game fans and cinema goers happy. Here are just three movie franchises that manage to strike the perfect balance.
Resident Evil
The original Resident Evil movie is still the best and though all the movies only skirt around the edge of the lore of the games, they do bring some of the best action and beautiful recreation of a video game to the silver screen. Couple that with how perfectly Milla Jovovich takes on the role of Alice and you couldn’t really ask for more.
Tomb Raider
The 2018 Tomb Raider movie is everything that we have been waiting for. Rather than the ridiculous Angelina Jolie movie, this one gave us a look at Lara Croft as a whole person, not just an action packed, plot free journey. The way in which character development shines through this movie offers a faint light of hope that there may be more to come, after all, the most fun we had playing the game was locking Winston Smith in the freezer.
Mortal Kombat
Brought out in 1995, the first of the Mortal Kombat movies captured the Mortal Kombat games perfectly. Considering that the game itself is a one-on-one fight game, the movie is pretty much exactly what you’d expect. It’s camp beyond belief, but all the characters are there, the theme tune is punchy and memorable and the fights deliver laughs as well as action. It’s fun to watch, almost as fun as the game is to play.
